Vice Chair Intro: Saran Uthayakumar

*that's me in the middle circa BMUN 68*

Hi y'all, my name is Saran (he/they) and I will be one of your vice chairs in the Darfur Genocide Crisis Committee this year. I am in my final year at Cal, where I study history and specifically study the history of genocide and human rights. I am currently applying to barista jobs and finding out where I will be going to graduate school – so a very exciting time of my life. In my free time, I love teaching and have been involved in teaching model UN at BMUN and beyond, as a coach at a training center!

I am really passionate about human rights topics and more so interested in how international organizations perceived national actions and nations' own responses to genocide. Sudan remains one of the most prevalent cases of genocide – and Darfur remains unaddressed and unacknowledged internationally despite its prominence in the media today. As delegates, I hope you intentionally think about the patterns of genocide, your role as international and national stakeholders, and how to prevent violence from perpetuating in the future by being an active delegate in our first-ever virtual crisis committee.

Feel free to ask me any questions pertaining to my Spotify, history in general, teaching, or what student activities/activism/life is like at Cal! My email is always open at suthayakumar@bmun.org for questions about Berkeley and the committee and can't wait to meet y'all!

[Please Read!] Clarifying Crisis Procedure + Tech Protocols

Hi everyone! We only have four more days until BMUN!!! Since BMUN is so close now, the chairs put together this mini-crisis rundown to help you all prepare for committee this upcoming weekend! Please read it in its entirety so that you are ready for committee. What is a "crisis committee"? Crisis committees are committees set in a certain time period, emulating different members of a small organization (ie. board of directors, senators, military members, etc). The main difference between a crisis committee and a general assembly committee is the pacing. In this committee, there will be about 20 delegates working to solve multiple "crises" that are brought up in relation to the topic, ranging from protecting refugees from an attack to responding to a drought that has left civilians without water. Instead of representing countries, each delegate plays a different character with a direct influence on the outcome of each event. When committee starts, unlike in general a...
